About
John Tommervik
Creativity has always been central to my life. I’m endlessly fascinated by visual communication—how images, shapes, and design can tell stories with and without words. My background spans graphic design, illustration, photography, and advertising, disciplines that trained me to constantly observe the world around me. Whether I’m looking at a gallery wall, a street mural, or a hand-painted sign above a shop, I’m always studying the visual language that surrounds us.
Travel and living abroad has shaped much of my creative perspective. Time spent in Honolulu, Miami, Seattle, Europe, especially in Amsterdam and Hamburg, exposed me to the influence of Bauhaus, modern design, and early twentieth-century Eastern European commercial graphics. These ideas about composition, structure, and bold visual clarity continue to influence how I approach painting today.
Living in Bozeman, Montana has immersed me in the landscapes and wildlife of the Mountain West. The animals and environments surrounding Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and the Flathead Valley frequently appear in and influence my work. Through these paintings I aim to capture the quiet strength, presence, and character of the wildlife that defines this region.
While my work is centered on fine art painting, my background in graphic design continues to influence how I see and interpret the world. Elements of composition, structure, and visual rhythm often shape the way animals and landscapes are translated onto the canvas.
For me, painting is both an exploration of place and a lifelong process of observation and learning.
