Still Wandering
8×10, acrylic on canvas
I was headed back to Gros Ventre Campground, about twenty minutes north of the town of Jackson, when I noticed hundreds of photographers and onlookers gathered just past the entrance. Curious, I drove past the turnoff and toward the crowd. As I got closer, I discovered what all the fuss was about—one of the largest bull moose I had ever seen. Photographers and spectators were scrambling to find the best vantage point possible. Watching the direction the moose was meandering, I remembered a back road I had taken earlier that day on my way to Mormon Row. I quickly drove over to that road to get a better angle. Much to my surprise, no one else had the same idea—I was completely alone in my vehicle. Within minutes, the bull moose made eye contact with me, walked toward my vehicle, passed directly in front of it, and then continued on his way. The video and photos from that incredible encounter later became the source material for several of my paintings. This particular painting captures the moment just after the moose had passed—when he turned back for one last look before wandering away.
